Janet and DavidDavid Edelman and Janet Garufis, Co-Chairs of the 2013 Santa Barbara Heart Ball, are dedicated to helping the American Heart Association make a significant impact and a sustainable difference in California's Central Coast communities. The result is Healthy Futures, a new program that empowers children and their families to make healthier lifestyle choices.

Their vision resulted in financial support from the Heart Ball going directly to implement this new workshop series developed by our Health Equity team. Heart Ball sponsors and supporters volunteered to implement the four-week Healthy Futures program at five local schools in April.

Santa Barbara News PressStudents learned about heart health, how to prepare healthy snacks and tips on healthy eating habits. It also featured a farmers market for the students and made headlines on the front page of the Santa Barbara News-Press. Some 100 students participated. But, the reach extended even further because homework assignments were designed to engage families and friends in physical activities that can lead to a healthier lifestyle.

Healthy Futures was presented in collaboration with the Santa Barbara Office of Education, the Food Bank of Santa Barbara and the A-OK after-school program. The momentum of this year’s effort will carry forward with volunteers excited to engage even more students in Healthy Futures in 2014 -- and beyond.
