Cooking for Healthy Hearts Program Tackles Food Insecurity in Canton
The Northeast Ohio American Heart Association is addressing the issue of food insecurity in Canton with Cooking for Healthy Hearts. This educational program is designed to teach residents the basics of good nutrition, how to prepare healthier meals with an everyday home appliance like a slow cooker, how to reduce sodium and sugar intake, and how to prepare meals on a budget from items found at the local food bank or at low cost from a local grocer. More that 60 families took part in the program and learned how to prepare two healthy, low-cost meals. Each participant was given a slow-cooker, heart healthy recipes and resources to guide them in making healthier choices in the kitchen.
The Healthcare Connection Organization improves patient hypertension rates with the American Heart Association
The Healthcare Connection has transformed hypertension rates in their community. Over the course of the last two years, patients achieved a blood pressure goal of <140/90. Together, with the American Heart Association, a global force for healthier lives for all, blood pressure control rates have continually been improved.
In 2021, through the National Hypertension Control Initiative and the American Heart Association, The Healthcare Connection received support to improve blood pressure control rates among their patients by creating a self-measured blood pressure program. The program has established a process with resources about blood pressure control, self-measured blood pressure education for patients and health care professionals, access to new, automated blood pressure equipment, It also has steps for health care professionals to take to help track, manage and improve patients’ blood pressure over time.
Chicken Zucchini Enchiladas

The American Heart Association is committed to driving equitable health impact in Ohio through five key priority areas: women, readiness, tobacco and vaping, patients, and healthy living. Equity is always at the center of our work, and it will continue to guide all that we do.
Through our focus on these key impact areas, and with collaboration among local organizations, sponsors, businesses, and others that serve the community, we are working to improve the health and well-being of Ohio citizens while saving and improving countless lives.
Throughout the state of Ohio, we’ve seen our community impact work grow, including efforts around creating avenues for greater access to care, expanding healthy food access and education, building a network of first responders through CPR kits in schools, supporting blood pressure screenings and education, and educating on the dangers of tobacco and vaping.
People are counting on us as never before. We at the American Heart Association, along with our supporters, will drive change, and we will be relentless. Thank you for your continued support.
For more than 40 years, Advocacy has had a mission-critical role in the American Heart Association's work. Our legislative and regulatory priorities help to mitigate risk factors and protect survivors in communities across the country. We support the enactment of evidence-based public policies that lead to longer, healthier lives.
Public policy advocacy is an essential strategy used by the Association to affect necessary and sustainable policy, system and environmental changes that help Ohio citizens build healthier lives free of cardiovascular disease and stroke.
Our efforts in Ohio and its communities are focused on the following policy areas: Tobacco and Vaping, Access to Care, Medicaid Expansion, and Hypertension Prevention and Control.
